EVA Air launches pace courting ‘flight to nowhere’

(CNN) – It may be less spiritual than the Buddhist mantra chanting in Thailand, but EVA Air’s latest idea, “Flight to Nowhere”, could be just as magical – helping people find love in the sky.

EVA Airways, one of the largest airlines in Taiwan, is partnering with travel experience company Mobius on a campaign called “Fly! Love is in the Air”. These are flights for singles on Christmas Day, New Years Eve and New Year.

“Due to Covid-19, EVA Air has organized ‘Faux Travel’ experiences to meet people’s desire to travel. When single men and women travel, they may not only want to enjoy the fun of traveling, but also want to meet someone – like a scene in a romantic film, Chiang Tsung-Wei, spokesperson for You and Me, Mobius’ speed dating arm, tells CNN Travel.

Each of the dating experiences includes a three-hour flight departing from Taoyuan International Airport in Taipei and circling the airspace over Taiwan, and another two hours of a romantic date on land.

Attendees are encouraged to have in-depth conversations on board as they sample meals prepared by Michelin-starred Chef Motoke Nakamura. They are also encouraged to keep masks when they are not eating or drinking.

Each of the three trips varies slightly. The flight on Christmas Day is followed by afternoon tea on firm ground. The New Year’s Eve date begins with a candlelit dinner before guests board the plane, where they count together until 2021. The one on New Years Day will be a breakfast appointment.

Flight attendants will act as “love cupids” on the EVA Air speed dating flight, says the organizer Mobius on his poster.

“Flights to nowhere” have become a trend during the coronavirus pandemic in Asia and the Pacific. Until now, most of these flights – which came from cities like Hong Kong, Sydney, and Taipei – have focused on sightseeing, with travelers getting aerial views of famous landmarks.

For passengers on matchmaking flights who want to look out the window as well as other singles, EVA Air day flights fly over Taiwan’s east coast, where they can see the mountain ranges that stretch from Hualien City in the north to Taitung City in the south .

The night flight will go over the island’s west coast, where Taiwan’s cities will be lit up in the dark.

Unlike a typical flight, there is no window or aisle in advance. The participants are placed pair by pair through a raffle. However, you can move around freely and entertain other travelers during meals ashore.

All three itineraries conclude with a heartfelt “Confession” section, in which participants reveal who they clicked with.

“The biggest advantage of speed dating on a flight is the seriousness of our participants,” says Chiang. “In addition to gathering attendees with sufficient purchasing power, it also attracts a group of individuals who enjoy traveling. With the same values, it increases attendees’ motivation to meet and helps smooth their conversation from the start.”

However, not only singles could take part in the flights.

Each flight seats only 40 passengers – 20 men and 20 women. Participants must be graduates with citizenship in Taiwan.

The event welcomes men between the ages of 28 and 38 and women between the ages of 24 and 35.

Age specifications have taken a negative hit online.

“From various surveys we conducted, most male participants want to meet women younger than them, while female participants want to meet men older than them, so there are different age criteria for the event,” adds Chiang “But you and I have organized different dating events that cater to different age groups.”

The fee for each trip is TWD8388 ($ 295) per person. All tickets for the first flight for Christmas are already sold out.
