Christmas travelers face traffic jams at Scottish airports and ferry terminals as they only have five days to visit family and return home without risking a police fine for lifting the lockdown.

Travel restrictions will be eased December 23-27 to allow the public to travel between local authorities and the four nations of the UK to join their bubble.

People planning to use public transport were advised to prepare well in advance and, if possible, to book in advance.

The Scottish Government said: “Many services require advance booking. You should book the trip as soon as possible. This will ensure you get a seat and give tour operators a good indication of the likely demand. Don’t leave it until the last minute. “
