You don’t need to restrict these travel plans. You need to find ways to reduce your back pain when it occurs while traveling.

Let me give you some of the best tips I give to all of my patients who have a fear of flying, not because they have a fear of heights or falls, but because of back pain.

Best tips for treating back pain while traveling

There are many tips out there when it comes to traveling with back pain. You probably know most of them. For example, plan non-stop flights as much as possible, avoid carrying heavy wallets or backpacks, and use rolling luggage. However, these are mainly intended to prevent back pain.

What can you do if you are on a plane another 5 hours and your back starts to act? Read on for what you can do to actively stop or reduce back pain.

Tip 1: get an aisle seat

Why an aisle seat? That way, you can get up and leave with no regrets. Most of us hesitate to squeeze over our seatmates, and an aisle seat means you can stand up anytime. So all the better if you can grab a seat near the front door with no seats in front of you.

Get up from your seat as often as possible and walk a little. Go to the bathroom even when you don’t need it. Why? Because you’re going to do a hamstring stretch, which is one of the best ways to get back pain relief quickly.

Lock the door and close the lid of the toilet. Put a heel on the toilet lid. Now bend at the waist and try to touch your toe. If you can’t go down that far, try grabbing your ankle. Stretch as much as you can and hold it up to 30. Switch legs. Wash your hands and return to your seat. Your back pain should be reduced drastically.

Tip 2: heat wraps

Heat packs are worn under your clothing and are often taped to your skin. When activated (often just shaking the product before use) these bring a long-lasting source of heat to your back that relaxes the muscles and provides soothing pain relief. Most heat packs last about 8 hours and activate in a minute or two. Keep one in your purse, bag, or carry-on bag. If your back is sore, you can find relief right away.

Tip 3: get a massage

While you can’t get a massage on the plane or train, you can usually get it at your hotel or a nearby day spa. If your back starts to hurt at the end of your flight, or if you find your back killing you the next morning, a quick visit to a day spa for a massage is a great way to start your vacation. It will also help you relax from a long, stressful journey.

Tip 4: Topical creams for pain relief

For mild pain, using a topical cream containing menthol, arnica, hemp, or capsaicin can help relax the muscles and stop the pain.

Some of the best topical creams include names like Topricin, Blue-Emu, and Cause + Medic. Before you travel, try a product or two of these products to make sure it works for you. Everyone is different and what works for one person may not work for another.

When you find the product you want, buy one or two and take it with you. Keep one in your carry-on bag or in your handbag so you can use it on the train or in a toilet when needed.

Don’t forget that little things can go a long way! If you get relief from a lumbar support pillow, seat cushion, neck support, or posture device, bring it with you! Nothing can spoil a vacation faster than back pain.
